They can either deposit the wish into a secure wish-making kiosk (and take a receipt), or hold it up in a portrait photograph. The portraits are subsequently printed out and given to each participant. The intention is to encourage the public to remember, re-enforce and reflect on the actions or events that they need to manifest in their lives. The project is portable - venues so far include little Cato Manor, Umthombo Drop-in Centre on Durban’s Esplanade, Warwick Triangle and KZNSA Gallery. As a social research project the Imagine Durban staff is currently analyzing the (approx 400) wishes collected in these various venues according to content. This will provide a comprehensive idea of the values needs and desires of people from various cultural/religious backgrounds. Over the next few months, we will be posting a series of wishes on this blog.

A
simple idea can grow into something big. This is highlighted by the
‘Wish Collecting Project’ initiated by Durban-based artist Tamlyn
Young. The project aims to create an archive that reflects the dreams
and desires of a cross section of contemporary society. It gives the
public a voice by encouraging people to clarify and express their
personal visions/hopes for the future. The project is expanding into
several formats. Passerbys are invited to write down their wish.
Participants can choose whether to make the wishing process a private
or a public ritual.
