The women of Inanda, in the Esiklebheni district, have joined forces and started a kitchen garden with the aim of fighting poverty and unemployment. Sukumani Gardening Club was started in 1994 by a group of 26 women. The club is based next to the Inanda Dam, which they use as their main water source. The women plant all kinds of vegetables and when ready to be harvested, the surplus is sold to members of the community and nearby stores. In 2009 Sukumani Gardening Club received external funding, from the Ethekwini Municipality's Planning and Development Unit, which they used to purchase equipment to help with their work.
