Parade to spread energy saving message Print

The eThekwini Municipality's energy ambassadors will be out in full force on Saturday morning, 28 March 2009, creating awareness and  encouraging residents to Switch off, Unplug and Save on electricity. The City, together with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), will be hosting a parade at key areas around the City where the public will get to meet "Switch" the energy saving mascot, and the WWF's, Panda bear mascot, "Chi-Chi". They will spread the energy saving message and encourage residents to switch off their lights for Earth Hour to be held on Saturday, 28 March between 8.30pm-9.30pm.

The parade will begin at the ICC at 9am, proceed through the CDB, including Warwick Junction, Dr Pixley KaSame (West Street) and the beachfront. The parade could also be seen along Musgrave and Florida Roads, Suncoast, Blue Lagoon, Broadway, and Umhlanga. They will then proceed to the southern areas, including a stop over at the Umlazi Mega city. The parade will end at the ICC at 4pm.

The City's iconic ICC will be switching off their lights, between, 8.30pm and 9.30pm as a token of support for the Earth Hour Campaign. Three media opportunities are available and the media are welcome to attend all of them. Plenty of photo opportunities will be available. 

9am: beginning of the parade, ICC Main entrance
4pm: A media briefing at the culmination of the procession promoting the City's energy saving campaign, "Switch off, Unplug, Save" will be held. Deputy Mayor, Cllr Logie Naidoo, will be handing over the signatures collected during the procession to the WWF Council Member, Michelle Wilson.
8.15pm: Deputy Mayor, Cllr Logie Naidoo, Miller Matola and Michelle Wilson will jointly switch off the Lights of the ICC for one hour until 9.30pm
