Achieving Energy Efficiency in Commercial Office Blocks
Monday, 19 October 2009

Date: Tuesday, 27th October, 2009, Time: 17h30 - 19h00
Venue:  Visitors Hall, Botanical Gardens, RSVP: Dorothy Lutchmiah tel: 031 311 4277 or email:  LutchmiahD@durban.gov.za

The Imagine Durban project and the UNIDO/DIPA Durban Industry Climate Change Partnership Project are pleased to host a presentation on Achieving Energy Efficiency in Commercial Office Blocks by Dave Mercer from WSP Energy Africa.  Dave has worked extensively in Durban on numerous energy efficiency projects for a range of industrial and commercial clients.  Dave will provide an overview of the key energy users in Commercial Office Blocks.   He will then highlight the key interventions that can be made in commercial office blocks to reduce their energy use.  Dave’s presentation will be approximately 40 minutes long.

The recent increases in electricity prices and proposals for further large increases for the next three years mean that commercial consumers of electricity need to pay increased attention to efficiency in order to contain their electricity costs.    Historically there has been little emphasis on electricity efficiency in South Africa, however there are numerous ways in which commercial office blocks and other businesses users of electricity can reduce their electricity use and so achieve large financial savings over the long term.   The purpose of this seminar is to assist businesses with office blocks to learn about the potential savings that they can make.

After his presentation there will be time for questions and discussions.  Snacks will be served at the start of the discussions.

On your bike: What the world can learn about cycling from Copenhagen
Monday, 19 October 2009

If the world's grandees pay close attention when they land in Copenhagen for December's UN climate-change conference, they might just find the eco solutions they need under their feet, says Robin Barton.

Gordon Brown is not known for his cheery disposition, but even he might crack a smile at the sight of a mother pedalling three grinning children to school by cargo-bike in Copenhagen. The Prime Minister will be visiting the Danish capital – where such scenes of urban pragmatism are normal – during the UN Climate Change Conference, which takes place from 7-18 December.

If he were to duck out of the delegates' scheduled "Energy Tour" of wind turbines and refuse incinerators, his perfect day might start at Det Økologiske Inspirationhus (the house of ecological inspiration) in Frederiksberg, continue with an organic lunch at Bio Mio, and conclude over a CO2-neutral beer at Nørrebro Bryghus; were he to have arrived in summer, he might have been tempted to leave his problems behind and join the locals cooling down after work with a swim at the Havnebadet and Copencabana city-centre harbour baths. But even a couple of hours outside the conference hall will reveal why Copenhagen is regarded as one of the most liveable, people-friendly cities in the world.

Global Climate Action Day
Monday, 19 October 2009

As part of Global Climate Action Day (Saturday 24th October) - more at 350.org -  Margate is planting 1000 indigenous trees.

2009 is the centenary of the founding of the seaside resort town of Margate, South Africa. The voluntary Area Tourist Committee promulgated the concept of planting ten indigenous tree per year to represent the past 100 years of the town's existence and to leave a green heritage for hopefully at least the next 100 years. The Municipality has agreed that the forest may be planted on the selected Municipal land site adjacent to the town library, art museum and civic centre and has also agreed to finance the project.

Anyone involved in a project in Durban?  Let us know.

Public encouraged to observe Car-Free Day
Monday, 19 October 2009

In supporting Car-Free Day, Gauteng Transport MEC Bheki Nkosi, will be using a public transport from Pretoria to Johannesburg.

Car-Free Day is marked on 20 October and is one of the highlights of Transport Month. It encourages commuters to use public transport in a bid to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.

Nkosi hopes that by using public transport he will encourage citizens to use public transport.  Campaigns as Transport Month and Car-Free Day are meant to help find a better transport solution for Gauteng through a reduction of car dependence and the promotion of public transport systems.
