Summary  

Imagine Durban is a Council-led project on integrated, long-term planning. It is being implemented in conjunction with Sustainable Cities, an NGO from Vancouver, Canada and the PLUS Network (a network of 35 cities sharing experiences in sustainability planning) who have received funding from the Canadian International Development Agency to support the project. 

The main purpose of the Imagine Durban project is to develop a visionary plan that can inspire citizens, non-governmental organisations, business and government to work together to make Durban the best city in the world.  . 

Imagine Durban has now put together a first draft of an Action Plan.  Through the consultation process at the outset of the Imagine Durban project six themes were identified for the plan.   A brief summary of each of the themes is presented below.  In the more detailed plan that is also available for comment shortly a set of actions to implement the strategies are identified.

I-Imagine Durban manje isihlanganise uhlaka lokuqala lwezinyathelo. Ngohlelo lokuxhumana, ekuqaleni kwephrojekthi ye-Imagine Durban, kwakhonjwa izindikimba eziyisithupha. Leyo naleyo ndikimba ifinyeziwe lapha ngenzansi. Ohlelweni olunemininingwane ethe xaxa nalo oluzotholakala maduze nje ukuze kuphawulwe ngalo, zichaziwe izinyathelo zokufeza lawa maqhinga.  

Lezi zinyathelo zihlelwe zalandelana ngokwezinyathelo ezithathelwe kulezi zigejana ezilandelalyo eziphambili ezibambe iqhaza:     

1. Abantu ngamunye

2. Umphakathi jikelele (Izinhlangano ezingekho ngaphansi kukahulumeni, Izinhlangano zomphakathi,  ezesekelwe enkolweni, izikhungo zemfundo ephakeme, njll.)

3. Abamabhizinisi

4. Uhulumeni wendawo

5. UHulumeni weSifundazwe kanjalo noHulumeni oMkhulu

Sustainable Schools Workshop Print

Imagine Durban invites school teachers and other school stakeholders to a workshop on:

MAKING SCHOOLS CENTRES OF SUSTAINABILITY.

The workshop will be facilitated by the Centre for Environmental Management (UKZN).  Topics to be covered (both through presentations and mutual sharing) are:

1. Latest concepts on sustainability
2. Projects and ideas for implementing sustainability in schools
3. Teaching materials on calculating ecological footprints
4. Getting back to nature: gardens, worm farms and interactions with anything wild and dangerous!

Imagine Durban Announces Winners of Green Campus Funds Print

A partnership of four schools in Durban has been awarded R70 000 by Imagine Durban to implement a Green Campus Project.

The winning schools, based in the city’s Outer West Region, are Kwa Thintwa School for the Deaf, Ndlokolo Primary, Highbury Preparatory School and St Mary's Primary School. The schools are supported by the Centre for Environmental Management (CEM) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) as part of its social outreach programme.

Imagine Durban is a municipality sponsored project being implemented in conjunction with Sustainable Cities, a Canadian NGO and the PLUS Network, a network of 35 cities in 14 countries that has been established to share experiences in sustainability planning, that is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency.

The competition falls into the Imagine Durban Demonstration Project category.

Some of the initiatives that will be implemented by the four schools with the funds are: 

  • CFL Light bulb replacement in all schools;
  • Introduction of geyser blankets;
  • A sustainability market day at KwaThintwa and Ndlokolo schools;
  • Developing and enhancing organic food gardens at all four schools
  • Developing teaching resources on ecological footprints and providing transport for learners from all schools to engage each other over the ecological footprint learning
  • Piloting a solar power project in one of the schools;
