The Imagine Durban Project is pleased to announce a new call for demonstration projects.   Three separate project categories have been identified for this call:

Project Category One:  Schools and Food Security – R100,000 allocation

Food Security has become an increasingly important issue both globally and within South Africa.  Nationally many government departments and non-government organisations have taken up this issue through the promotion of numerous food gardening projects.   One area where there has been particular focus is on the promotion of food gardening projects within schools.   The purpose of the project category is to provide an opportunity to implement a project that will show case long term sustainability in schools food security or to test an innovative approach to schools food security.

Project Category Two:  Enhancing safety and accessibility of a public open space –R100,000 allocation

Public open space provides important opportunities for a range of recreational, economic and social activities.  However public open spaces can also be places were crime is committed and people feel unsafe.    The purpose of this project category is to provide an opportunity to test an innovative idea that can act as a model for enhancing the safety and recreational accessibility of public open space in the eThekwini Municipality.   Examples of possible projects include:

1. Reconceptualising a public open space so that it serves a purpose for the local community and as a result use, activity and safety improves.

2. Facilitation of a partnership between government and the local community that improves the maintenance of a public open space in a way that enhances safety and accessibility.

Project Category Three:  Enhancing livelihoods of people involved in informal recycling – R100,000 allocation

Informal recyclers provide an import service to society by improving recycling rates and so reducing waste to landfill sites and thereby lengthening the life span of landfills.  The purpose of this project category is to test an innovative idea that could enhance the livelihoods of people involved in informal recycling.   Examples of possible projects include:

1. The development of an improved transport method for recyclable material

2. The facilitation of a relationship between informal recyclers and a community or group of businesses that improves the collection rate of informal recyclers.

3. A project that enhances the status of informal recyclers so that there service to society is recognised and supported by businesses and community.

The deadline for submission of proposals is 4pm on Thursday 10th December 2009.

Schools and food security is an interesting concept that can be sustained if the relevant stake holders are first appraised of the concept and are given the opportunity to be part of the process at all levels. This will ensure that they "buy in "to the concept. It will also require monitoring and funding to ensure sustainability. Would be interesting to implement.

Schools and food security go hand in hand in community development and sustainability. It is in this manner that a community can erradicate its problems, if schools become centres of learning, not only for children to learn, but centres of learning for the entire community. I belive that to improve on food security, 1 period a week for every class, must be spent on teaching learners basic gardening. The school i am invlolved in has been running an organic garden since 2006 and farms about 300 sqm. It is a challenge to sustain it due to the high costs of water, but it is just a challenge that we can overcome by having inovative ideas.
