The public is invited to an interesting open forum meeting, hosted by Imagine Durban that will critically examine the state of local democracy in Durban. The purpose of the Imagine Durban Open Forum sessions is to stimulate debate and discussion on long-term solutions to key issues that are facing Durban. This session will discuss if developmental local government is alive and well in our city. It will question to what extent has the eThekwini Municipality created the conditions for a vibrant and healthy democracy? Are civil society organisations engaging constructively with the state? How far have we come? How long is the road ahead?

The seminar will be moderated by Ms Janine Hicks, a Commissioner from the National Gender Commission. Mr Sipho Cele, the Deputy City Manager will offer a perspective from local government, whilst Dr Richard Ballard, from UKZN's School of Development Studies will share his views. We will also hear Mr Ebrahim Steyn's thoughts from the Democracy Development Programme (DDP). As always, their short inputs will be followed by an open and vibrant discussion.

The discussion will be taking place as follows:
  Date: Friday, 20 February
  Time: 12h30 - 2pm
Venue: UKZN Auditorium (Innovation Centre), Francois Road.

RSVP:  Sindira Chetty for seating purposes on telephone 031 311 3430 or email chettysindira@durban.gov.za
