Mayoral Biodiversity Award Print

Nominations for the Biodiversity Award, which forms part of the Mayoral Awards, are open.  The Biodiversity Award recognises the efforts of those schools, community groups/ NGOs, businesses/ industry and individuals who are making an invaluable contribution to conserving biodiversity in the eThekwini Municipality Area.

Nominations are accepted throughout the year, culminating in the Awards Dinner held in November each year.  Nominations may be submitted to the Environmental Planning and Climate Change Department at:

Commit to reducing emissions Print

While developed countries must commit to legally binding emission reduction targets, developing nations should commit to mitigate the effects of emissions, says President Jacob Zuma.

Addressing the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen, Denmark on Friday, Zuma said South Africa's view was that all developed nations must commit to legally binding emission reduction targets in line with historical responsibility and with the needs of science.

2010: International Year of Biodiversity Print

The year 2010 is International Year of Biodiversity.  To celebrate this the Environmental Planning & Climate Protection Department of the eThekwini Municipality and its partners will be hosting and coordinating a number of events to highlight the importance of our city’s biodiversity. More information will be made available on these events in the coming months.

Naidoo Urges World Leaders to Save Climate Print

On becoming Greenpeace International executive director, prominent human rights activist, Kumi Naidoo, has warned world leaders that there can be no excuse for not attending the upcoming United Nations Copenhagen Climate Summit and agreeing a fair, ambitious and binding treaty to save the climate.

Naidoo argues that the Copenhagen Summit offers the single greatest opportunity for leaders to come together and create a legally binding agreement to avert climate chaos.

He also urged leaders to act to save the climate, adding that they must avert the threat of mass migration, mass starvation and mass extinction all of which will be inevitable if climate change goes unchecked.

Parliament holds public hearings on climate change Print

Parliament will this week hold public hearings on the political, economic and social impact of climate change.

The hearings, taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday, are aimed at developing a comprehensive picture of how climate change is impacting on communities and ecosystems in South Africa.

According to a statement, several Portfolio Committees, including Water and Environmental Affairs, Energy and Science and Technology are expected to take part in the hearing.
