satyagraha.jpgThe Gandhi Development Trust in partnership with Satyagraha is hosting their annual speech contest for Grade 7 learners and an essay competition for Grade 10 learners. The aim of the competitions is to inspire in people the values and principles espoused by Gandhi and in this way help to build a healthier and better universe, a more responsible nation and dedicated, peaceful and caring people. Learners will have to choose from one of the five topics for the both competitions:

  1. If I had three wishes for South Africa…
  2. Yes we can! The power of the youth vote to retain or change the status quo.
  3. Part-time community service should be a compulsory part of the secondary school curriculum
  4. The world has youthful leaders like Obama and Malema… What are the qualities I admire in a youth leader
  5. My views on the increasing violence in our schools

The speech segment will be divided into an impromptu segment and a prepared speech segment. The impromptu segment will follow on the completion of all prepared speeches. There will be a 5 minute preparation time for the impromptu speech .The impromptu segment is when learners are given a list of topics at the contest and are given 2-minutes to talk on it. Sound research, effective presentation and logical arguments will be credited.

The essay competition will require Grade 10 learners to write 2½ pages on the topics provided. The essay must be the learners own work and should be written in English. Sound research, effective written presentation and logical arguments will be credited.

Closing date is April 30, 2009. For more information contact Ela Gandhi on 031 3735486 or email egandhi@gdt.org.za
