SA Can urgently need volunteers to assist with disaster management tasks after Friday's freak storm. If you can help now or in the future.

COLLECTION POINTS FOR VICTIMS
They need food, blankets, lighting to support victims who have lost their homes. There are 24 Hr collection points at Hillcrest Emergency Veterinary Hospital, Cube House, 32 Old Main Rd. Engen Garage in Waterfall. Other collection points are RJ's Hillcrest and La Pizza Pazza Kloof
 
The SA CAN (Community Action Network) facilitated extensive community support for yesterdays storm disaster victims. Although, sadly lives were lost, the power of the SA CAN network helped bring speedy assistance to those in need. Supplies, blankets, vehicles and volunteers were gathered through SA CAN communications and liaison points in record time.
 
Peaceplayers International City Wide Tournament Print

37 schools were represented at the 15th PeacePlayers International City-Wide Tournament held on 1 November 2008 at Hoy Park, Durban.  After several intense rounds of competition Dina School was crowned the girls City-wide champions and Addington School was crowned the boys City-wide champions.  PeacePlayers International works at schools in 8 different communities:  Chatsworth, Durban Central, Durban North, Lamontville, Molweni, Umbumbulu, Umlazi and Wentworth. 

PeacePlayers International employs 85 youth coaches and managers in Durban to teach basketball and act as mentors to the students participating in the PeacePlayers programme.  In conjunction with its programme to teach youth basketball PeacePlayers International teaches a life skills curriculum that aims to allow students to learn about issues such as self-confidence, HIV/AIDS and drugs and alcohol. Voter registration weekend Print

Durbanites, register to vote this weekend!

More than 59 000 Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) officials will be employed for the voter registration weekend. IEC Chief Communication Officer (COO), Kate Bapela, said the IEC was currently completing the final arrangements, such as the last contracts for voting stations, and appointing outstanding registration staff.

"We can now confirm that more than 59 000 registration officials will be employed for the voter registration weekend and we are also checking whether voting stations have received the necessary material," she said. The IEC has scheduled voter registration weekend for 8 - 9 November 2008 across the country's nine provinces.

Ms Bapela said 19 713 voting stations will be open between 08:00 and 17:00. She further appealed to all South African citizens to go and register or to SMS their ID numbers to 32810 to check their registration details.

The South Durban Basin Social Programme Group (SProG) members, were recently treated to a dynamic and entertaining presentation by internationally renowned motivational speaker Robin Banks.

Robin Banks is South Africa’s leading authority on Mind Power and a highly sought after International speaker. His ultimate desire is to empower people to take charge of their lives and create a brighter future for themselves, their community and their country. The course focuses on teaching inspiring positive mind techniques, holistic life principles, financial awareness and other relevant life skills.

Robin Banks through his Africa Project is offering a full mindpower course to all SDB NPO’S, teachers, nurses, and those involved in community development. A full course normally costs R3500.00, but only a registration fee of R100.00 is requested from SDB SProG members, to ensure commitment from participants.

An introductory briefing session is being held on Wednesday the 12th November 2006 from 13h00 to 16h30, at  the Austerville Community Hall. Thereafter, the training will occur for 4 consecutive weeks and will end on the 10th December 2008.

Get tested during HIV Testing Week Print

A first ever collaborative campaign between NGOs, provincial government and private companies is urging South Africans to choose life and get tested during HIV Testing Week. 

Taking place from 3 - 8 November, HIV Testing Week will provide counseling and testing services at government sites as well as NGO funded and private sector sites in the Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Northern Cape provinces.  The aim is to have 110 000 people tested during the week.

The campaign is coordinated by New Start, the social marketing arm of local HIV/Aids services NGOs, Right to Care and Society for Family Health. It is supported by corporate partners and provincial health departments in the five provinces where the campaign is taking place and funded by the US Presidents Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR) and USAID.
