ETHEKWINI INVOLVED IN THE UNITED HANDS PROJECT Print

In an attempt to ease poverty in the deep rural areas of the eThekwini Municipal area, the City Council, in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Department of Health, donors Foodbank and a consortium of fifty medical specialists from the United States of America will provide medical assistance to the poverty-stricken residents of eNgonyameni on the outskirts of uMlazi Township, south of  Durban.

The United Hands Project will take place at Vumengazi Traditional Court, eNgonyameni on Tuesday and Wednesday, 27 and 28 July 2010.

BULWER PARK REDESIGN Print

The eThekwini Municipality is initiatiing the process of re-conceptualising and redesign several parks within the Municipality.  One of the first parks that has been targetted for re-design is Bulwer Park in Glenwood.  The redesign procress is being led by the Architecture Department of the Municipality.  The public consultation process is being facilitated by the Imagine Durban project of the Municipality. 

The questionaire can also be completed on-line at http://www.imaginedurban.org/bulwerpark .  All submissions should be completed by the 10 August 2010.   This questionaire can be completed by individuals or entire organisations.

 
Circumcision Makes The Cut Print

After months of behind-the scenes work, the campaign for male medical circumcision has gone mainstream in eThekwini with an official launch ceremony at the UMbumbulu FET College recently. The event, hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal and eThekwini Health Departments, was attended by crowds of young people, traditional leaders, councillors and heads of some hospitals.

Health MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said medically supervised circumcision had been shown to reduce the transmission of HIV, but warned, “Being circumcised does not mean that you must fool around. “It is important to use protection even if you are circumcised.” Dhlomo said the programme aimed to go beyond the procedure itself to teach young men respect, discipline and how to behave themselves, and would also be taken to churches.

NOMINATE YOUR LIVING LEGEND Print

The Municipality is calling for the public to nominate people in their communities to stand in for the Living Legends awards. Nominees should be people who were born within the Municipal area and who have excelled in the following categories: music, sports, arts and drama, politics and social responsibility. This will be the third Living Legends Awards to be held in September.

Director of the Local History Museum, Mlungisi Ngubane, said the Municipality intends to award or recognise people who have done exceptionally well in their respective fields. These should be individuals whom communities feel have made valuable contributions to society and deserve to be respected and honoured, he said.

Durban street traders receive 48 safe plastic drums Print

Forty-eight drums have been given to each of 13 Durban-based cooperatives owned by black women under the Safe Happy Drums initiative, launched in 2005 by the Responsible Packaging Management Association of Southern Africa (RPMASA) and the eThekwini Department of Health to help street traders and vendors avoid the risk of contaminating consumable liquids, such as water, juice or sorghum beer during transportation or storage.
