refugee.jpgThe situation is Durban has finally stabilized but the Red Cross is still feeding people and they estimate that this need could continue for up to three months. According to their disaster manager, the Red Cross is feeding around 2000 people in fifteen sites around Durban. These include the police stations as well as churches.

The Red Cross is still in need of donations of food and goods. They are specifically looking for non-perishables as they no access to cold storage. Donations can be made at their headquarters at Cato Manor police station. Call 031 309 7380 for more information.

Diakonia, who have been co-ordinating shelter for refugees in churches around Durban, are not accepting or distributing donations but they ask that people make donations directly to the churches in their neighbourhoods. While food is welcome, they suggest that it would be better to donate money and let the churches buy the food they need, e.g. one church may be inundated with bread, another with orange juice and they will then need to organise some kind of trade.

Emmanuel Cathedral is now feeding 260 people. They can accept perishables as the food is prepared on site and daily but they also are in need of toilet paper, clothes and baby food.
